From an arthritic, swollen knee to playing cricket twice a week

Paul · Age 64 · Tarporley

The challenge

Paul came to us at 64 with an arthritic, swollen knee. He couldn't walk without pain and was facing the prospect of giving up the sport he loved — cricket. He'd been given exercises to do at home by his physio, but they weren't producing results.

Our approach

Paul called into the studio on impulse and spoke with Yannis. Rather than adding complexity, Yannis built a very simple but effective plan around Paul's knee, his current ability and the demands of getting back onto the cricket pitch — delivered over two hours of training per week.

"He devised a very simple but effective plan which has produced results far exceeding my expectations. Working with Yannis for 2 hours per week I am now pain free, 15 Kilos lighter, much stronger/fitter/mobile and playing cricket twice per week. I can highly recommend him and SW Fitness to help you achieve your fitness goals whatever your age or condition."

Returning to the saddle after a devastating horse riding injury

Kate Young · Equestrian · Tarporley

The incident

In March 2025, Kate suffered a severe open fracture of the tibia and fibula when another horse kicked her left leg during an eventing competition. The injury required emergency hospital treatment and multiple surgical procedures, including wound exploration, external fixation, vacuum-assisted wound management, intramedullary nail fixation, correction of rotational deformity and primary wound closure. To add to the complexity, Kate had previously undergone ACL, MCL and meniscal surgery on the same leg.

The challenge

Kate needed to restore lower limb strength, rebuild confidence in weight bearing, improve mobility and joint function, regain balance and stability, reduce strength deficits between limbs, and develop the physical resilience required for horse riding. Returning to the saddle demands strong lower limb control, core stability, dynamic balance, shock absorption capacity and confidence when handling unpredictable movement from a horse.

Our approach

Kate followed a progressive rehabilitation programme at SW Fitness UK, structured in three distinct phases. Each phase built on the last, bridging the gap between clinical recovery and the specific demands of competitive eventing.

Phase 1: Recovery and Foundation Building

  • Movement restoration
  • Swelling management
  • Safe weight-bearing progression
  • Range of motion improvements
  • Early strength development

Phase 2: Strength and Stability

  • Single-leg strength
  • Hip and glute development
  • Balance and proprioception
  • Neuromuscular control
  • Core strength

Phase 3: Return to Riding Preparation

  • Dynamic strength training
  • Functional movement patterns
  • Impact tolerance
  • Fatigue management
  • Confidence rebuilding
"When you're told you've suffered a serious fracture, it's easy to focus on everything you've lost. The rehabilitation process gave me confidence at every stage, helping me see progress week by week. Being back on my horse within four months felt incredible and is something I wasn't sure would be possible in those early days."
